Free Summer Meals Program for parents and children offered through MPS pilot program

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minneapolis Public Schools Nutrition Department is launching a pilot program to provide free summer meals to parents as well as children at three schools beginning June 16.

The program, an extension of the existing free summer meals program available to all children throughout the city and sponsored by MPS and the USDA, will serve the parent communities of Lucy Craft Laney, Nellie Stone Johnson and Cityview schools.

Nicole Barron, MPS nutrition business manager, said, “Shared meal time between children and parents is crucial to family bonding, and the summer meals program is a great chance for kids to maintain school friendships and for families to stay connected to their communities.”

Cost of parent meals at pilot locations will be offset by a corporate grant. Locations were chosen based on proximity to economically challenged areas of the city. With the exception of Friday, July 4, breakfast and lunch will be provided Monday through Friday throughout the summer.

Accompanying this advisory is a listing of all free summer food service programs sponsored by MPS and the USDA. Locations other than those in the pilot program offer free meals to children 1-18 years of age only.
