South High teachers kick math

MINNEAPOLIS – South High School math teachers Morgan Fierst and Stephanie Woldum have been named State finalists for the 2015 Presidential Awards in Math and Science Teaching.

The awards are considered the highest honor in K-12 math and science teaching. When the White House announces nationwide finalists, the finalists will be flown to D.C. for celebratory events and receive a $10,000 prize from the National Science Foundation.

To achieve State finalist status, Fierst and Woldum each had to submit video of a math lesson and complete a 15-page application that demonstrated their academic knowledge, skill in instruction, and passion for teaching. Fierst submitted video of a lesson in advanced algebra. Woldum submitted a lesson in intermediate algebra.

It is expected the White House will announce state winners by the summer of 2016. To learn more, visit www.paemst.org.
