  • Via mobile app: search SchoolCafe in your smart phone app store.

Free/Reduced-Price Meals

Families may apply for free/reduced-price meal benefits any time during the school year.

Applicatios are done through the Application for Educational Benefits process. Families receive these forms before the student’s first day of classes.

The forms are also available on line by visiting www.schoolcafe.com. If household income or size changes, families can apply for meal benefits anytime during the school year.

Meal Charging: Not Enough Money in Account

If a student or family account does not have enough money to pay for lunch, students are able to charge a basic meal to their student account, but will not be able to buy any a-la-carte items such as second meals, entrees and/or milk.

Notification of Account Status

  • Families can check their student’s meal account balance via the SchoolCafe app; online at www.schoolcafe.com; or by contacting the School Culinary and Wellness Coordinator in their school’s kitchen or the Culinary and Wellness Services office at 612.668.2820
  • The parent/guardian will receive a phone notification when the household account is at ten dollars ($10.00) or less every Tuesday evening.
  • The Culinary and Wellness Services Department encourages parents to complete the Application for Educational Benefits.
  • A letter/invoice is sent monthly via US Post to the household requesting payment and a second request for payment is sent if parents have not responded to the first request.

Refunds and Balance Transfers

All refund or balance transfer requests may be directed to MPS' Culinary and Wellness Services office at 612.668.2820 or email: hashep.seka@mpls.k12.mn.us.

Balances remaining in a student’s account at the end of the school year will carry over to the following school year.

If the student moves to a new building, the balance will transfer along with that student.

Collection of Unpaid Meal Debt

When the student meal balance is minus ten dollars (-$10), the following collection actions will be taken:

  • The School Culinary and Wellness Coordinator will contact the household to request payment.
  • The Culinary and Wellness staff will contact the building principal if no payment is received.
  • The principal will contact the parent/guardian to determine an appropriate solution.
  • Assistance from county social services may be requested by the school if parents refuse to provide meals or pay for school-prepared meals for their children.
  • The expectation is all fees owed to the district will be paid in full on the last day the student will be attending classes.
