Minneapolis Public Schools and the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers settle teacher contract
MINNEAPOLIS – The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT) and Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) settled the 2015 teacher contract last night. After seven months of negotiations, MPS and MFT reached a deal that is good for students and teachers while keeping the district on the path toward a sustainable future.
In a joint statement, MFT President Lynn Nordgren and MPS Interim Superintendent Michael Goar said, “This contract is about doing positive things for the students of Minneapolis Public Schools. It’s about engaging with teachers around classroom safety and dealing constructively with behavior issues. And, it’s about supporting and rewarding great teaching and related services. This contract does all of these things.”
The Board of Education and the MFT Executive Board will receive a detailed explanation of the contract in Executive Session in January.
When approved by the Board and the MFT membership, the new contract will provide additional time for teachers to prepare and collaborate in order to ensure the best learning experience for their students in the classroom. Incorporated in the contract are proposals for the development of both short-term and long-term strategies to enhance the success of positive school-wide engagement, keeping both students and staff safe.
