Minneapolis Board of Education continues due diligence
MINNEAPOLIS – The Office of the General Counsel, on behalf of the Minneapolis School Board, has reached out to and is receiving cooperation from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education regarding their review of complaints made about the handling of special education students in Holyoke Public Schools. Dr. Sergio Páez, voted by the Board this week as the preferred candidate to be the next Minneapolis Superintendent, was leading the Holyoke district in Massachusetts when the concerns surfaced.
During the hiring process for Superintendent, a thorough background check and multiple discussions with professional references for Dr. Páez, including an official from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, were completed. Information about the Holyoke complaints and investigation was not available until after the Dec. 7, 2015, vote to select Dr. Sergio Páez as the preferred candidate to be the next Superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools.
Two Minneapolis Board of Education Directors will be traveling to Holyoke next week to conduct in-person conversations with relevant past associates and others. The Board is committed to finding and evaluating all pertinent information regarding the Holyoke issues before finalizing a contract with Páez.
