Minneapolis Board of Education announces Gabriel Spinks as new Student Representative
MINNEAPOLIS – The Minneapolis Board of Education has announced Edison High School sophomore Gabriel Spinks will serve as the next Student Representative. He replaces outgoing Student Representative Shaadia Munye from Patrick Henry High School.
Spinks says his goal is to “represent all MPS students by listening, engaging and attempting to make sure all voices are brought to the table.” He is a committed participant in the AVID and Junior Achievement programs, where he strives to make change in his community through product development. Spinks has also lead Socratic seminars, tutorials and debates for his peers. He is known for his desire to address social issues, racial equity and promotion of minority voices.
Edison staff have observed that Spinks regularly forges connections between all students to build community and seeks to elevate others with dignity and respect. Edison Principal Eryn Warne describes him as “a deeply thoughtful young man.” “Gabe conducts himself with calm and composure at all times. He is a model student and citizen, and we are so proud of his great, well-deserved accomplishment,” she said.
The Student Representative provides an important perspective and gives voice to those at the heart of the district’s work: MPS students. To learn more about Spinks, visit board.mpls.k12.mn.us/gabriel_spinks.html
