Key area one: Achievement
We have to improve all students’ academic outcomes, especially the performance measures of our students of color. Our students deserve and need even more rigor and culturally responsive instruction to support them to succeed.
Here are the tangible steps we are taking to improve student achievement:
  • Implementing a new PreK–5 literacy curriculum. A pilot will begin in schools in the spring of 2017, with full implementation in the fall.
  • Developing a multi-tiered system of support to meet students where they are at academically and socially and provide intervention and enrichment as needed.
  • Training principals, specialists and teachers on a culturally responsive and evidence-based core literacy framework and curriculum.
  • Developing further professional development opportunities around the standards of balanced literacy, and incorporating components of literacy across all curricular areas.
