Great things cookin’ in the MPS kitchens
MINNEAPOLIS – Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) Culinary & Nutrition Services has won Best of Show for Food Management magazine’s 2016 Best Concept Awards. Through its innovative food truck, Farm to School program, True Food Chef Council, MN Thursdays local lunches and push to decentralize kitchens, MPS Culinary & Nutrition Services is leading the way as a national model for school nutrition.
The award site states: “MPS Culinary & Nutrition Services, led by director Bertrand Weber, was awarded the Best of Show honor for the transformation it has effected over the past four years in how food for the district’s 36,000-plus students is produced as well as what is served. Under Weber, MPS has progressed from an operation that relies primarily on centrally produced prepackaged meals utilizing processed ingredients to one that emphasizes scratch cooking, fresh ingredients and more locally sourced product.”
Since 2012, MPS has been proudly sourcing fresh produce, meats, baked goods and other products from local farmers and manufacturers for the meals provided to students in the district. It’s a win-win — MPS supports our neighboring farmers and food economies, and kids love the fresh, flavorful food.
It’s all about doing what’s best for Minneapolis kids. With healthy bodies and healthy minds, students have a better shot at reaching their fullest potential.
