2014-15 Highlights



Department Accomplishments

  • Two new state-of-the-art fitness centers were opened at South and Roosevelt.
  • Edison announced their Ray Perkins award winner; this award was given to DeShaon Felix Tweit.
  • Athena Awards were given to the outstanding female athlete at each Minneapolis Public High School. This years winners were Oshana Reich (Edison), Hannah Webb (Patrick Henry), Kieara Hunter (North), Kolang Vang (Roosevelt), Rebecca Moore (South), Daisy Astrid Richmond (Southwest) and Lucia Renikoff (Washburn).


  • Edison pitcher James Swofford led the state in strikeouts this year with 115.
  • Southwest boys baseball advanced to the Section 6AAA Finals, and senior Cole Williams was named as a Star Tribune Prep Athlete of the Week.


  • Kevin Gleason, a senior at Washburn High School, was named to the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association’s 2014-15 Academic All-State team.
  • Patrick Henry seniors Stephen Kennedy and Jacarius Ford (boys) along with Dariel Lipscomb (girls) were selected to play in the Inner City All-Star Basketball Game.
  • Roosevelt seniors London Cobbs and Arione Farrar were selected to play in the Inner City All-Star Boys Basketball Game. Both students were awarded scholarships to the North Dakota School of Science. Their basketball coach (Roosevelt Alumnus) Rob Mestas was selected as boys basketball coach of the year.
  • North High School basketball coach Larry McKenzie was inducted into the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 1. 


  • The North High School football team made it to the state semifinals.
  • The Southwest High School football team competed in the Section 3AAAAA championship game.


  • Southwest girls and South High boys were crowned conference champs at the City Golf Meet held at the Minnekahda Country Club.
  • The following golfers advanced to the Section 6AAA Final Round:
    • Victoria Graens (sophomore) – Southwest Girls
    • Logan Toftner (sophomore)– Washburn Boys
    • Cullen Wagner (senior) and Tyler Hoover (senior) – South Boys


  • The boy’s lacrosse team advanced to the Section 6 semi-finals.


  • Our Adapted Soccer Team advanced to the state tournament.
  • The Washburn girls soccer team competed in state finals.

Swim & Dive

  • Peter Lefebvre, swim and dive at Southwest, finished 4th in the 200 free with a new district record of 1:41.15.
  • Congratulations to Southwest students Addy Alms, Elizabeth Een, Peter Lefebvre, and Karl Schwarzkopf on being named to the National Interscholastic Swim & Dive Coaches Association Academic All-American Team.


  • Men’s Class AA: the Washburn Doubles team of seniors Sam Ilic and Jacob Toffler finished in 2nd Place in the Championship.

Track / Cross Country

  • Washburns Track & Field won its third Conference Championship in three years. This was the first time in school's history that both Boys and Girls had done this in the same year. In sections both Boys and Girls placed 7th. This was the highest they have placed since being part of this 16 team section.  The Millers will be represented by Mohamed Sharif in the 400m and Emily Covert in the 3200m at State.
  • Women’s Track – Class A: 100m Dash – Jia Lewis (Edison, 9th grade) 1st Place and Jada Lewis (Edison, 10th grade) 2nd Place ; 200m Dash - Jada Lewis 1st Place; 4 x 100m Relay – Edison Mariana Cress (Edison, 10th grade); Jia Lewis (Edison, 9th grade), Jada Lewis (Edison, 10th grade), and Linda Senaphanh (8th grade) 1st Place ; Long Jump - Jada Lewis (Edison, 10th grade) 7th Place.  The Edison Girls Track Team finished in 2nd place.
  • Women’s Track – Class AA: 3200m – Emily Covert (Washburn, 8th grade) 11th Place ; 400m - Caitlin Smyth (Southwest 9th grade) 8th Place and Robbie Grace (Southwest 8th Grade) 3rd Place.
  • Men’s Track – Class AA: 100m – Keyon Thomas (North, 12th grade) 5th Place and Al-Jureau Ray (Southwest, 12th grade) 26th Place; Triple Jump - Al-Jureau Ray (Southwest, 12th grade) 11th Place; 400m –Mohamud Sharif (Washburn 12th grade) 7th Place.
  • Edison twins Jia and Jada Lewis won 1st and 2nd place in Minnesota State 100 meter dash. Girls 4x100 meter relay team also won 1st place. Overall team score: Edison 2nd place.
  • Washburn cross country athletes Andrew Sell, Hamza Ali, Martin Donovan, Emily Covert and Hannah Oscarson competed in the state race on Saturday, Nov. 1. The boys’ race had 176 participants; Andrew Sell finished 17th, Hamza Ali finished 25th and Martin Donovan finished 70th. The girls’ race had 173 participants; Emily Covert finished 5th and Hannah Oscarson finished 20th.
